Have you ever had a fresh apple fritter at night? Have you ever had a jelly-filled donut with jelly so firm you question its material state because you feel so safe eating it wearing a white shirt? I'm a musician, so I wander into SF for gigs every now and then. This place was pointed out to me by a friend who's a native. He brought our mutual friend to Bob's Donuts after a delightful afternoon/evening performance and subsequent dinner for dessert. We were intrigued by the idea of a donut shop that's open 24 hours. There's no where to sit, inside, so you get your donut(s) and go. I usually eat them curbside. I have not been disappointed by any of the donuts I've tried. Lately, I've seen guava jelly donuts that are amazing! And guava isn't even in my top 5 favorite fruits!

TLDR: An SF classic, no doubt. Not necessarily a go-out-of-your-way item in my book, but if on Polk and with an out of towner donut lover, definitely a worthwhile stop. Longer: Years and years ago, I lived a few blocks away and would frequent the Chinese Foot Reflexology spot next door. I wasn't eating gluten at the time, but would stop at the window just to take a deep breath of all the sweetness and see what was on the shelves in case an item stood out as something a friend would enjoy (so I could live vicariously through them, obvi!) I would say Bobs is no frills, but time and time again I'm happily surprised when I see a new flavor in their windows! See: cinnamon toast crunch donut in my pics. Bob's will always have something special (unless you're there when the inventory is low) -- ie fall flavors when the leaves are turning, holiday flavors at the end of the year (I swear I've seen an eggnog something, but no photo evidence in my camera roll). Early morning is the best time to stop by, as their shelves are full and the line (if there is one) moves quickly. Midday and evenings on weekends, you could find yourself in a line halfway down the block. It'll still move fast, but it won't be a stop n' go fast. This area of Polk is colorful, so be prepared for anything ;P Over the years, I've grabbed one to two dozen donuts for birthdays + office celebrations, and they've been happy to fill the boxes with a variety of donuts and any special requests. They've also had a few other pastry options in the morning, like cream+jam fill danishes and croissants, which I'll add to my dozen for the sake of any coworker who doesn't want a donut, but still wants to participate in celebrations.

Another classic. Open 24/7! Endless amount of options (also vegan friendly) but my favorite is the original glazed donut. Wish they opened more locations!

What more can be said about Bob's that hasn't already been said a thousand times on this page? It's a classic San Francisco institution with a gleaming reputation that's well earned. They make a damn good buttermilk bar, an undeniably fluffy yeast glazed, their crumb topping deserves all the hype that it garners, and I'm a very big fan of their basic but beautiful cinnamon sugar cake doughnut. But aside from being open -all- the time I think my favorite aspect of Bob's is the massive cake-sized ring doughnuts that they sell. My perfect rating here is mostly for how perfect this novelty doughnut is, not only in terms of presentation, but in terms of taste. This glazed behemoth of sugary bliss really does have all the magic, moisture, and gentle fried crunch of its much smaller sibling. Picking up one of these dozen-sized-box-filling doughnuts to any brunch gathering is an instant show stopper that delivers every tasty morsel you could imagine for it's under $25 price point. It's rare that something looks this cool and actually brings the flavor punch that that mouth wants from what my eyes see. Long live Bob's ridiculously big and ridiculously delicious doughnut!
